We are all guilty of searching ourselves, well at least I am, and most parents want original names, names that don't mean the wrong thing, or lead there child to later abuse on the playground! The Way to Run

I am relatively new to the sport of running. I have always found my exercise through the art of chasing balls. Basketball, football, baseball, volleyball, tennis, and even squash. The ball, and the game, take your mind off the fact that you are running and moving and pushing yourself to exhaustion.

The art of running has no distraction. It's you, and your body and your mind, pounding down whatever surface you choose for the day. There are no interactions to take your mind off what you are feeling. No one calling a foul, no comradery or trash talking to motivate you. It is a singular sport. Even if you choose to run with others, you spend most of your time processing and evaluating your own personal pace, gate, and state of well being.

It has taken time, but I have learned to enjoy running. I'm not saying I love it, and practice it as a passion, as some of my friends do. I'm saying that I finally understand the attraction. You can't escape yourself when you run. Music helps, but there is a mind body connection that can not be excused. Pain, freedom, elation, free thinking, sadness, and sense of accomplishment are only a fraction of the emotions you feel.

I asked a friend once what she thought about when she ran: She quietly replied, "everything." Then quickly followed that statement with, "I also constantly think about turning around, or calling someone to pick me up!" The art of the run, I think it's time to lace up.

Last night while making Chicken Parmesan for the kids, my son informed me that he had a flat tire on his bicycle. He asked me if that meant that he had to buy a whole new tire or just the inner tube? I decided I had enough time while my sauce simmered to educate him and his sister on the fine art of patching a bicycle tube. Thank goodness they found it fascinating and were surprised how easy it was with the right tools. They were so excited they both went for a ride on their bikes around the neighborhood while I finished up the chicken. I have always loved bikes and cycling and hope to hand that passion on to my children because it holds a life time of benefits. Cycling with your kids is more than a good way of getting them out of the house and exercising – it turns even mundane trips such as the school run into quality time. Fall is upon us, but there is still plenty of time to ride!

Chicago is laying down the law on crib bumpers!

Its hard to know what to believe when it comes to our own health and the health of our children. So Many studies, so many scary facts. "Did I assemble this correctly?", "Is this secure enough?", "Is this the best product for my child?", "is this safe for my child?". These are just a few of the thousands of questions that run through every parents mind daily! When asked for advice I always suggest common sense, research, and the, "does it feel safe to you?" philosophy. The city of Chicago feels differently, and is going to make one decision for all parents in their jurisdiction.

Chicago became the first city in the U.S. to ban the sale of crib bumper pads last week. The City Council approved the ordinance, which was introduced after Chicago Tribune investigations suggested bumpers pose a suffocation risk to babies.
The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association maintains that crib bumper pads can help prevent injury when used correctly, and the ordinance which proposes to ban bumpers in the City of Chicago could bring unintended consequences if crib bumper pads are not made available to parents and caregivers.

The JPMA said that in 2011, it commissioned a third party review of previous studies of crib bumper pads. Based on the outcomes of the studies that were reviewed by Exponent, a leading engineering and scientific consulting firm providing solutions to complex technical problems, found that there were methodological problems that were apparent in the criteria used to select the incidents included for analysis and in the analytical treatment of other potential contributors. So they basically did not have enough evidence or data.

In March of 2011, Innovative Science Solutions (ISS) announced that a thorough review of published scientific studies performed for JPMA revealed no direct evaluation of a relationship between crib bumper pad use and infant death.
The Exponent study said that "Investigations into sleep environments of infants consistently fail to identify crib bumpers as a unique or separate source of serious injury or death to sleeping infants. Studies focusing efforts on evaluating sleep-related hazards generally, and crib bumpers explicitly, similarly do not find crib bumpers to be a significant risk."

"Based on the analysis completed by Exponent, the crib bumper pad ban in the City of Chicago is baseless and may be putting children at risk for further injuries due to unintended consequences and parents attempting to create makeshift items to replace bumper pads," said Michael Dwyer, JPMA executive director.

The state of Maryland is considering a similar proposal to ban the sale of bumpers.

Healthy habits during pregnancy!

Have you or a girlfriend ever used pregnancy as an excuse to skip workouts or to overindulge because you’re “eating for 2?” Pregnancy is the perfect time to start or continue a healthy lifestyle…no more excuses. A nutritious diet, a low to moderate exercise regimen, and a rested state will help lead to a greater feeling of well-being for not only you, the mother, but also your growing child and family. The habits you form now will affect generations to come.

When I was pregnant with my son 3 years ago, I had the nutrition part down. A cold glass of milk coupled with a piece of fruit and steel cut oatmeal was my breakfast staple. Lunch was always a hearty, protein rich salad with a side of fruit and wheat crackers. My dinners were as equally balanced. I religiously hydrated every hour and munched on snacks as needed (nuts, raw veggies, dried or fresh fruit, and an occasional brownie – my guilty pleasure).

Exercise was also a no brainer. However, when fellow gym rats began questioning me and my protruding baby bump about my rigorous weight lifting routine and long runs on the treadmill, I figured I better do a little prenatal exercise research. In the end, I didn’t want to harm my little being inside. Some websites suggested I refrain from all abdominal work, another said to not lift objects greater than 30lbs, and others cautioned me to keep my heart rate under 140 beats per minute. If this was all true, then my son and I were doomed! Luckily however, I learned of a local pre- and postnatal program. Each Stroller Strides/Fit4Baby instructor was nationally certified and based their workouts upon the rate of perceived exertion. Not only did I receive a phenomenal interval based workout that combined cardiovascular and strength training, but I was given modifications for certain moves, kindly reminded to tone it down during tough sets, and made close friends with my 12 other competitors (all soon to be or new mamas).

Now, the resting part…hmmm…that is something I still struggle with to this day. However, during my pregnancy state, I did take an hour out of my afternoon each day to read a book or do some reflective thinking. Reducing my schedule and obligations, taking time for myself, and getting to bed early are some of my goals that are slowly becoming more achievable.

It’s truly up to you to determine where the line falls; just try to do what’s best for you and your baby’s health. Eat nutrient dense foods, enroll in prenatal exercise (Yoga and Pilates are wonderful options as well), and get ample rest.

This morning I came across a fun and fascinating website called .thekidsshouldseethis.com I could not stop watching all the wonderful videos.

As the website states: There's just so much science, nature, music, arts, technology, storytelling and assorted good stuff out there that my kids (and maybe your kids) haven't seen. It's most likely not stuff that was made for them...

Porsche is entering the Stroller Game!

I am more of a Toyota - Honda person, but when I saw this I just had to share. Porsche has entered the stroller market with this sleek designed P'4911 model, created by industrial designer Dawid Dawod. It's sleek, masculine, has ball bearing axle-less wheels , and supposedly will fit in the trunk of any Porsche. My question is where does your child ride after the stroller has taken up the entire back seat area? Who cares! It's cool and Its a Porsche! This is not on the market yet, but I can't wait to see one. Cost? It could set the new high mark for luxury strollers. Again, who cares! It will be the true Porsche of strollers.

Cardboard Highchair!

When I was a child card board boxes offered hours of entertainment and fascination. I once turned a box that housed a new stove into a space ship, then a pirate ship, and finally at days end, it became a post office. Not once did i think of turning it into a functional highchair!

I have seen this crazy chair floating around the web and in a few industry mags for a year or two, but have yet to see it in person. I love its simplicity, and its reuse, reduce, recycle pathos. It is the brain child of Turko-Australian designer/visionary Betul Medakbas . She realized what the world needed was more flatpack cardboard children's furniture, and so, with the help of noted Australian cardboard designer Anthony Dunn, Belkiz was born.

I have a strong feeling that I have not seen one for sale yet due to all the safety hoops this chair will have to jump through. Its own website -Belkiz.com , displays and informs us beautifully about the chair and its functions and sustainability, but does not offer any place to purchase it. We will have to wait a little longer for the world to embrace Cardboard baby furniture.

What's in a Name?

Choosing your baby's name is one of the most important thing you do as a parent. A lot of thought goes into naming a baby - will the name suit him or her, does it work with your surname and the names of the rest of the family, can it be abbreviated, is there any potential for teasing and so on. However, naming your baby takes on a whole new dimension if you consider that the name you choose might actually affect your baby's future.

The belief that your name plays a significant role in determining your destiny is one that has been held for many, many years throughout the different cultures of the world. However in Western society the focus of naming has tended towards choosing names that sound nice (and possibly their superficial meaning), rather than in any deep rooted belief that names could actually affect the way our children's lives turn out. So, the question is do the names we choose for our children have more of an impact than we think?

Im not sure where I stand on the issue, but their is plenty of literature on names based in numerology and astrology that can really make choosing the perfect name difficult! Here is the list of the top 100 names being chosen so far in the states for 2011. My Daughter just informed me that the top two names listed this year are two of the main characters from the book/movie series Twilight! Happy Naming!

Helicopter Parents!

As a parents we are inundated with information regarding the safety and well being of our children. What is right?, what is too much?, what is not enough?. It can become a little overwhelming if you let it, and I have seen the growing trend of over worrisome parents. The term is not new, but lately I hear it being thrown around like candy at a parade , "Helicopter Parent."

We all know one, have at least seen one, or perhaps are a bit of one. Overly protective, concerned about every move on the playground, every interaction and every single grade and assignment at school. I am not here to judge, but merely observe. I believe that being involved with your child and staying involved is paramount to a healthy upbringing. Sometimes we all need to pump the brakes a little.

When i was a child the term used daily in parental conversation was "latchkey." I was one of those who arrived home after school to an empty home every day. I believe that my generation of Latchkey parents has evolved into the over protective hovering parent as a mechanism for making up for what we thought we lacked as children.

A Friend of mine stumbled across these fantastic photos. The mother, Adele Enerson, has taken the time and creativity to photograph her sleeping baby in some very original and thoughtful settings. She Says," This blog is my maternity leave hobby. While my baby is taking her nap, I create scene around her and take quick snap photos. I use only few minutes per picture, including creating idea, implementation and editing, 'cause I don't want to disturb her sleeping and most of my time is for my family. On June 17th from 10 am – 2 pm, bicycle and pedestrian-friendly Boulder businesses will commandeer 18 parking spaces on “Park(ing) Spaces Day.” Businesses and workplaces will transform a street or private lot automobile parking space into a “park” area for the day.

There will be Park(ing) Spaces to play games, kick back and read a book, lounge on some rolled out grass or patio furniture, practice yoga, walk your dog, get a massage, drink some tea or just hang out and chat with other visitors in overstuffed chairs for a little while to take a break. Real Baby will have a jumping Castle so Bring the kids!

Park(ing) Spaces will average eight feet by 17 feet.

This is a light-hearted attempt to raise awareness of a serious issue, the trade-off of space allocated for automobiles versus space for human activities. This event symbols our desire to rethink how we use our streets. This is a big part of what Walk & Bike Month is all about, raising awareness for a more sustainable community.

Here is a list of summer safety tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics. When I read the section on strenuous activity for my children I realized I fall short in the hydration department. Perhaps thats why my son said his head hurt the other day after two plus hours at the skate park in the blazing sun. More water!

Babies under 6 months:

The two main recommendations from the AAP to prevent sunburn are to avoid sun exposure, and to dress infants in lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and brimmed hats that shade the neck to prevent sunburn. However, when adequate clothing and shade are not available, parents can apply a minimal amount of suncreen with at least 15 SPF (sun protection factor) to small areas, such as the infant's face and the back of the hands. If an infant gets sunburn, apply cold compresses to the affected area.

For All Other Children:

The first, and best, line of defense against harmful ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure is covering up. Wear a hat with a three-inch brim or a bill facing forward, sunglasses (look for sunglasses that provide 97% -100% protection against both UVA and UVB rays), and cotton clothing with a tight weave.
Stay in the shade whenever possible, and limit sun exposure during the peak intensity hours - between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
On both sunny and cloudy days use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater that protects against UVA and UVB rays.
Be sure to apply enough sunscreen - about one ounce per sitting for a young adult.
Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.
Use extra caution near water and sand (and even snow!) as they reflect UV rays and may result in sunburn more quickly.

The intensity of activities that last 15 minutes or more should be reduced whenever high heat and humidity reach critical levels.
At the beginning of a strenuous exercise program or after traveling to a warmer climate, the intensity and duration of exercise should be limited initially and then gradually increased during a period of 7 to 14 days to acclimatize to the heat, particularly if it is very humid.
Before prolonged physical activity, children should be well-hydrated and should not feel thirsty. For the first hour of exercise, water alone can be used. Kids should have water or a sports drink always available and drink every 20 minutes while exercising in the heat. Excessively hot and humid environments, more prolonged and strenuous exercise, and copious sweating should be reasons for children to substantially increase their fluid intake. After an hour of exercise, children need to drink a carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage to replace electrolytes lost in sweat and provide carbohydrates for energy.
Clothing should be light-colored and lightweight and limited to one layer of absorbent material to facilitate evaporation of sweat. Sweat-saturated shirts should be replaced by dry clothing.
Practices and games played in the heat should be shortened and more frequent water/hydration breaks should be instituted. Children should seek cooler environments if they feel excessively hot or fatigued.

POOL SAFETY

Never leave children alone in or near the pool or spa, even for a moment.

Install a fence at least 4 feet high around all four sides of the pool. The fence should not have openings or protrusions that a young child could use to get over, under, or through.
Make sure pool gates open out from the pool, and self-close and self-latch at a height children can't reach.

If the house serves as the fourth side of a fence surrounding a pool, install an alarm on the exit door to the yard and the pool.

Keep rescue equipment (a shepherd's hook - a long pole with a hook on the end - and life preserver) and a portable telephone near the pool. Choose a shepherd’s hook and other rescue equipment made of fiberglass or other materials that do not conduct electricity.

Avoid inflatable swimming aids such as “floaties.” They are not a substitute for approved life vests and can give children and parents a false sense of security.

Children ages 1 to 4 may be at a lower risk of drowning if they have had some formal swimming instruction. However, there is no evidence that swimming lessons or water survival skills courses can prevent drowning in babies younger than 1 year of age.

The decision to enroll a 1- to 4-year-old child in swimming lessons should be made by the parent and based on the child’s developmental readiness, but swim programs should never be seen as “drown proofing” a child of any age.

Whenever infants or toddlers are in or around water, an adult – preferably one who knows how to swim and perform CPR – should be within arm’s length, providing “touch supervision.”

Avoid entrapment: Suction from pool and spa drains can trap a swimmer underwater. Do not use a pool or spa if there are broken or missing drain covers. Ask your pool operator if your pool or spa’s drains are compliant with the Pool and Spa Safety Act. If you have a swimming pool or spa, ask your pool service representative to update your drains and other suction fitting with anti-entrapment drain covers and other devices or systems. Large inflatable above-ground pools have become increasingly popular for backyard use. Children may fall in if they lean against the soft side of an inflatable pool. Although such pools are often exempt from local pool fencing requirements, it is essential that they be surrounded by an appropriate fence just as a permanent pool would be so that children cannot gain unsupervised access.

Children should wear life jackets at all times when on boats or near bodies of water.

Make sure the life jacket is the right size for your child. The jacket should not be loose. It should always be worn as instructed with all straps belted.

Blow-up water wings, toys, rafts and air mattresses should not be used as life jackets or personal flotation devices. Adults should wear life jackets for their own protection, and to set a good example.

Adolescents and adults should be warned of the dangers of boating when under the influence of alcohol, drugs, and even some prescription medications.

OPEN WATER SWIMMING

Never swim alone. Even good swimmers need buddies!

A lifeguard (or another adult who knows about water rescue) needs to be watching children whenever they are in or near the water. Younger children should be closely supervised while in or near the water – use “touch supervision,” keeping no more than an arm’s length away.

Make sure your child knows never to dive into water except when permitted by an adult who knows the depth of the water and who has checked for underwater objects.

Never let your child swim in canals or any fast moving water.

Ocean swimming should only be allowed when a lifeguard is on duty.

Springtime in Colorado is always unpredictable. The day may begin at 70 and sunny and turn windy and cold by noon. So, when a play date at the park is always threatened by a chance of a shower or even a snowstorm I find it imperative to my well being to always have a back up plan. Throw down a piece of paper on the kitchen floor with some paints and brushes and you’ve bought yourself at least a half hour of pure kid bliss. Better yet let them stick their toes in it and let them paint an entire piece with their feet!

Teaching Your Child to Cook

I spend allot of time in my kitchen. Preparing, chopping, sauteing, broiling, pan searing, plating, I love it all. I learned to cook at an early age, mostly out of necessity. A single mother with two jobs and four children made for some hungry moments. I believe the firs thing I cooked on my own was either a coffee cake with cinnamon walnut topping, or a fried bologna sandwich. Whichever came first I was extremely proud of my accomplishment.

I loved watching my mother cook. She spent time showing me the basics, and let me help her prepare meals when ever I asked. My favorite experience was shopping with her at an outdoor market located downtown. An old world style open market with local vegetables piled high, fresh fish displayed in all their glory on beds of clean shaved ice, every cut of meat imaginable, including cured meats hanging high above for all to see. The sights, sounds and smells of the market were intoxicating to me, and created in me an appreciation for food and for cooking.

My Children hover around me in the kitchen while I cook and I love it. letting them get involved has opened their eyes to many different types of food, some of which I would not have even considered eating when I was a their age. I have found that my son and daughter's palate has has grown since they started learning in the kitchen. If they help me wash the broccoli, put it in the steam basket, set the flame to it, and touch it with a bit of salt and butter, they take pride in the process and ownership of the meal they helped create. The best part is they eat it and enjoy it! Fish, greens, whole grains and vegetables become and adventure and children become curious about how things taste when they help create it.

So many other benefits surround getting your children active in the kitchen. They learn self confidence, creativity, knowledge of where food comes from, time management, organization, and even basic science. So take your child shopping, get them involved in the kitchen and teach them the joys of food!

Every where I look, be it a blog, facebook, magazines, or even television , I am seeing the popular new trend of gender reveal parties. Heres how it works. At the couples 20 week ultrasound, the technician is asked to write down the gender of the baby, put it in an envelope and seal it. The envelope is then given to a family member or baker who will make the cake and die the inside of the cake the corresponding color to reveal the sex of the baby. The couple cuts open the cake, and at last everyone gets to know the gender of the child.

At first, I rolled my eyes at this idea. Gathering people for this seemed odd. But then, I thought back to when we found out the gender of our first child and how fun it would have been to share the experience with our friends and family. It is a moment you remember forever, so why not have a party to celebrate! All the games and wives tails can be played out at this party, just like at a baby shower, but made more fun by finding out the answer as soon as the cake is cut into. Music benefits everyone, especially Children

Growing Up, Growing Musically
When I was very little I remember hearing rythm in music. I would see it as colors when I closed my eyes. I still do to this day. Music has always been a huge part of my life. I constructed drum kits out of kitchen utensils, pots and pans, and stacks of magazines all throughout my earliest years. It was fun and empowering, and my mother encouraged it, even though the racket I was making must have been intolerable. I encourage my children to listen, to sing, to dance, and to play music whenever and wherever they can. Here is some information I found that may encourage you to get your children moving to the beat of their own drum.
Research shows that kids who are actively involved in music (who play it or sing it regularly):
- do better in reading and math when they start school
- are better able to focus and control their bodies
- play better with others and have higher self-esteem
You've probably noticed that your preschooler can keep a steady beat. You can help your child practice this skill by encouraging listening for beats — and determining if they're steady or not — in everyday objects. For example, point out the noise a kitchen clock makes and ask your child if it is a steady beat; then ask if a sound like a car horn or a dog barking has a steady beat. Practice clapping or tapping the beats to favorite songs and encourage your child to copy you.
Let's Dance
The simplest thing you can do is put on music and dance with your child. Vary the rhythms and tempo of your body with the music. Practice "copy dancing" where you invite your child to imitate your movements and then let him or her lead as you follow.
You also can make the musical experience more visual through movement and a few props. Scarves can show ascending and descending pitches — raise the scarves up over your heads as you sing up the scale and then drop them down the floor as you go down. Or have your child walk on tiptoes when you listen to high, quiet music, and stomp his or her feet to louder, slower music.
Combining music and movement helps preschoolers learn to control their bodies. They learn to move fast to fast music, and more slowly to slow tunes. They also can learn the hand movements and simple dance moves that go along with rhymes and songs. Learning physical control is an important developmental step and can help build concentration skills and self-control later on.
Time for Instruments?
Although some music-instruction programs are geared to preschoolers, most kids at this age will enjoy a more casual introduction to musical instruments. Provide a rhythm stick or a set of bells to hold in each hand and encourage your child to keep the beat while you listen to a song.
Here are some ways to give kids opportunities to be musical:
- Sing or listen to music in the car, while you're doing chores, and while your child is playing. Keep a basket of musical instruments where kids can get them. Consider buying a kid-friendly CD player your child can operate and keep in his or her room.
- Make sure your child's preschool offers chances to sing and play simple instruments, to move to music, and to create music. Ask the teacher what songs they regularly sing so that you can sing them at home.
- Enroll your child in a preschool music class. If you don't know where to begin, ask the music department at your local college for suggestions.
- For a special treat, take your child to live musical performances, especially ones designed for preschoolers. Museums, libraries, and bookstores often host performances by children's-music artists. Outdoor concerts are also a good bet for preschoolers because they can dance and move around without disturbing anyone.
And after you've seen a concert together, encourage your child to give a performance for your family at home. He or she can even cut out construction paper tickets and get dressed for the occasion. At showtime, take your seat and get ready for a great show!

Perhaps preschool should be about discovery and not learning?

I remember being tested for kindergarten. I really do. My mother brought me to a large brick building and left me alone in a room with a stranger. I was told to perform certain tasks, such as, put the pegs in their corresponding holes, name some shapes and colors, draw inside the lines, etc. I am happy to say I passed, and at a bit of a young age, was able to join the ranks at my local Kindergarten. My learning experience at a young age was vastly different than that of my children. Mine was very regimented. My old world Catholic schooling meant that I was taught and told, with very little room to explore. The word rote comes to mind. I write this because I just found a fascinating article and study about the way we teach our children at a young age. The research states that teaching children more and more, at ever younger ages, may just backfire. Read the article HERE.

Not Just Yet!

Just when you thought it was safe to turn your one year old around in their car seat and face the brave new world for the first time, a new study drops and shatters your world! New advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics based primarily on a 2007 University of Virginia study finding that children under the age of 2 are 75 percent less likely to suffer severe or fatal injuries in a crash if they are facing rear in their car seat. Hold the phone! I was told the stead fast rule of one year or 20 lbs. was the magic formula for the safety of my child. The new study shows compelling evidence, and with the advent of larger car seats, with heavier weight limits, it seems that this is truly the way to go. Some parents are taking the wait and see approach, and sticking with what their car seat manufacturer suggests, or are following the guidelines of their vehicle manual. Either way, the best parent is a well informed parent.

I hear the word milestones thrown around allot when people are talking about parenting. It usually starts with a discussion about sleeping through the night, and moves through teeth, first word, crawling, walking, potty training, and on and on. As my children have gotten older I have noticed that milestones turn into moments. If you don't pay attention, the moment will rip past you before you have even opened your eyes. It's easier when there little. They can't leave the house without you, actually they cant do anything without you. It is a captive singular audience. You notice every gesture, every snot bubble, every new laugh and smile. Today I would have a hard time telling you what my son wore to school. Hectic schedules of sports, after school programs, and plays are the norm now. Last night I was paying attention and caught a glimpse of a moment. My son making us all laugh at dinner by delivering a punch line with perfect timing, delivery and sweetness. He seemed proud of himself as we all repeated his gag line several times after, laughing harder each time. He is finding his sense of humor and it is a beautiful thing. I am writing this as a reminder to myself. Pay attention to the moments, because they are milestones.

Black Market Breast Milk?

It's back in the news again. The buying and selling of breast milk has been a hot topic for years. Now with the ease of use of social networking sites and places like Craigslist, it has become much easier to find the precious commodity. While the tradition of wet nurses dates back centuries, there's apparently been a four-fold increase in demand for human milk, fueled by adoptions and by the use of breast milk in the treatment protocols for certain infant diseases. Milk banks charge $3/oz. for thoroughly tested, pasteurized breast milk, and usually require a prescription. For folks without the extra $2,400/month to spend on breast milk, pediatricians, nursing support groups, and lactation consultants sometimes act as go-betweens for parents and donors. Now you can buy on line on Craigslist locally or E Bay nationally or find a source through websites such as Only The Breast. This of course may save you money, but at what cost.

The big risk, of course, is disease; many infections, including Staph and HIV, can be transmitted to a baby through breast milk. Another risk is knowing the source of your breast milk, their diet and habits may put our child at risk. The Debate will continue.

New Booster Seat Law For Colorado

As of August 1st 2010 Colorado law states that all Children between the ages of four to eight must be in a booster seat while in your vehicle. Why eight? Studies have shown that children do not properly fit into a back seat of a car until somewhere between eight and 12 years old. Colorado lawmakers chose the age of eight as a minimum.

The new Colorado Child Passenger Safety Law goes into effect on Sunday, August 1st. A police officer will be able to administer a ticket if he pulls over a car and notices a child not in the appropriate child safety seat. There is a one-year educational period and only warnings will be issued to those violating the booster seat part of the law.

Parents need to explain to children that it is a safety issue and that it is not a matter of how mature they are. It's all about the size of the child and how he or she fits into the seat belt in the back seat of a car. The lap portion of a seat belt is absolutely critical to restraining the children.

Vera Fullaway of Colorado Child Passenger Safety says "If a child is not tall enough, the lap portion of the belt will slip over the hips and go into the abdominal area. Booster seats raise them up to the level of the seat belt so that the seat belt will fit them appropriately and the abdominal area will be guarded."

Fullaway says there are way too many accidents in Colorado where that lap belt has not protected a child because the boy or girl is not adequately secured. "We see anything as simple as hernia from one end of the abdomen to the other.. to injuring all the organs in the abdomen.. to as severe as severing the spinal cord somewhere in the abdominal level."

"We don't want to have children spend a lot of time in the hospital for surgeries. We want them to walk away from the crash and Belt Positioning Boosters are such a simple fix," Fullaway explained.

Fullaway also says the shoulder portion of a seat belt needs to fit across the child's collar bone and chest," Fullaway adds. "It should not cross their neck or be underneath the arms or behind the back."
