Just when you thought it was safe to turn your one year old around in their car seat and face the brave new world for the first time, a new study drops and shatters your world! New advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics based primarily on a 2007 University of Virginia study finding that children under the age of 2 are 75 percent less likely to suffer severe or fatal injuries in a crash if they are facing rear in their car seat. Hold the phone! I was told the stead fast rule of one year or 20 lbs. was the magic formula for the safety of my child. The new study shows compelling evidence, and with the advent of larger car seats, with heavier weight limits, it seems that this is truly the way to go. Some parents are taking the wait and see approach, and sticking with what their car seat manufacturer suggests, or are following the guidelines of their vehicle manual. Either way, the best parent is a well informed parent.
Welcome to the Real Baby blog! This is the place to find out about the latest gear, toys, fashion and furnishings that we absolutely love. We love to share stories, thoughts and information too!

I hear the word milestones thrown around allot when people are talking about parenting. It usually starts with a discussion about sleeping through the night, and moves through teeth, first word, crawling, walking, potty training, and on and on. As my children have gotten older I have noticed that milestones turn into moments. If you don't pay attention, the moment will rip past you before you have even opened your eyes. It's easier when there little. They can't leave the house without you, actually they cant do anything without you. It is a captive singular audience. You notice every gesture, every snot bubble, every new laugh and smile. Today I would have a hard time telling you what my son wore to school. Hectic schedules of sports, after school programs, and plays are the norm now. Last night I was paying attention and caught a glimpse of a moment. My son making us all laugh at dinner by delivering a punch line with perfect timing, delivery and sweetness. He seemed proud of himself as we all repeated his gag line several times after, laughing harder each time. He is finding his sense of humor and it is a beautiful thing. I am writing this as a reminder to myself. Pay attention to the moments, because they are milestones.

It's back in the news again. The buying and selling of breast milk has been a hot topic for years. Now with the ease of use of social networking sites and places like Craigslist, it has become much easier to find the precious commodity. While the tradition of wet nurses dates back centuries, there's apparently been a four-fold increase in demand for human milk, fueled by adoptions and by the use of breast milk in the treatment protocols for certain infant diseases. Milk banks charge $3/oz. for thoroughly tested, pasteurized breast milk, and usually require a prescription. For folks without the extra $2,400/month to spend on breast milk, pediatricians, nursing support groups, and lactation consultants sometimes act as go-betweens for parents and donors. Now you can buy on line on Craigslist locally or E Bay nationally or find a source through websites such as Only The Breast. This of course may save you money, but at what cost.

As of August 1st 2010 Colorado law states that all Children between the ages of four to eight must be in a booster seat while in your vehicle. Why eight? Studies have shown that children do not properly fit into a back seat of a car until somewhere between eight and 12 years old. Colorado lawmakers chose the age of eight as a minimum.
The new Colorado Child Passenger Safety Law goes into effect on Sunday, August 1st. A police officer will be able to administer a ticket if he pulls over a car and notices a child not in the appropriate child safety seat. There is a one-year educational period and only warnings will be issued to those violating the booster seat part of the law.
Parents need to explain to children that it is a safety issue and that it is not a matter of how mature they are. It's all about the size of the child and how he or she fits into the seat belt in the back seat of a car. The lap portion of a seat belt is absolutely critical to restraining the children.
Vera Fullaway of Colorado Child Passenger Safety says "If a child is not tall enough, the lap portion of the belt will slip over the hips and go into the abdominal area. Booster seats raise them up to the level of the seat belt so that the seat belt will fit them appropriately and the abdominal area will be guarded."
Fullaway says there are way too many accidents in Colorado where that lap belt has not protected a child because the boy or girl is not adequately secured. "We see anything as simple as hernia from one end of the abdomen to the other.. to injuring all the organs in the abdomen.. to as severe as severing the spinal cord somewhere in the abdominal level."
"We don't want to have children spend a lot of time in the hospital for surgeries. We want them to walk away from the crash and Belt Positioning Boosters are such a simple fix," Fullaway explained.
Fullaway also says the shoulder portion of a seat belt needs to fit across the child's collar bone and chest," Fullaway adds. "It should not cross their neck or be underneath the arms or behind the back."

The Little giraffe was born on the 25th of May in the year 1961…St Sophie’s day! In those days, the only animal toys available were farm animal or pet figures.. That is why one day in France, a certain Monsieur RAMPEAU, who was an expert in transforming sap from the HEVEA tree using the rotational molding of rubber as a toy-making concept, came up with the idea of designing a giraffe.
Such an exotic wildlife figure would be a first on the market, and its size and shape would be ideal for a baby’s small hands to grasp. Sophie the Giraffe, who looked exactly the same then as she does today, went into production on a Thursday, May 25th, whence her name. She was an immediate success.
Young mothers straightaway saw that she was a must for their children when the first signs of teething appear, Sophie the Giraffe helps baby stop crying!By simple word of mouth, the little Giraffe’s fame spread. From then on in Europe, generation upon generation of children were to love hearing Sophie squeak whenever they pressed her tummy and head!Vulli, a company based in Rumilly in the Haute-Savoie Region of France has continued to keep the jealously-guarded secret of how this wonder toy is made.SOPHIE is still “traditionally” produced to this day, a process that involves more than 14 manual operations. She is made from 100% natural rubber derived from the sap of the Hevea Tree.
Why is Sophie such a huge success? Sophie the Giraffe is BABYS FIRST TOY, stimulating EACH OF HIS SENSES from the age of 3 months:
•Sight: At the age of 3 months, a baby’s eyesight is still limited and he can only make out high contrasts. The Dark and contrasting attention-catching spots all over Sophie the Giraffe’s body provide visual stimulation and she soon becomes a familiar and reassuring object for baby.
•Hearing:Sophie’s the Giraffe squeaker keeps baby amused and stimulates his hearing. To begin with, the funny sound Sophie makes when she is squeezed helps to stimulate baby’s hearing, and then later, helps him to understand the link between cause and effect.
•Taste:A Sophie the Giraffe is made of 100% natural rubber and food paint, and is completely safe to chew, just like a feeding bottle teat. Her soft texture and numerous chewable parts (ears, horns, legs), make her perfect for soothing baby’s sore gums during teething.
•Touch: Touch is the first means a baby has of communicating with the outside world. Sophie the Giraffe’s soft feel, like baby’s mother’s skin, stimulates physiological and emotional response that soothe baby and promote healthy growth and well-being..
•Smell: The singular scent of natural rubber from the Hevea tree makes Sophie the Giraffe very special and easy for your child to identify amid all his other toys.
•Easy to grip: Sophie the Giraffe’s shape and 18 cm (7 inches) size are perfect for baby’s small hands. She is very light, and her long legs and neck are easy for baby to grip, even from his earliest days.
Still the same, even after more than 46 years…
She hasn’t dated in the slightest..
More than 30 million Sophies have been sold… Purchase Sophie Here!

The holiday's have past and we are all back to our routines. I woke this morning, and remembered one of my favorite memories from this season. Our store Real Baby collected toys this Christmas for the Toys for Tots campaign. I arrived at the store to pick up our huge brightly wrapped box that was over flowing with toys. Like everyone at Christmas time, I was in a hurry, and late, and still had 10 things to do for a dinner party that night, but I had to deliver this box to its final destination 40 minutes away. I drove fast and took chances. I missed and exit and cursed at my misfortune. I was in a bad mood. I arrived at the Toys for Tots warehouse within in one hour of them closing, on the last day of them being able to accept toys. I rushed up to the office door to find a nice girl behind a desk in a completely empty room. She told me to go to bay #11. "Great, bay #11, how far away is that ?" I thought. "Just pull your car up and someone will help you," she said. I jumped back into my car and checked my watch. Running out of time. I pulled up to giant bay door #11 of the massive warehouse. The door was lifted open and I was greeted by a gentleman wearing a santa hat and coke bottle glasses. "Welcome to Santa's workshop!," he shouted. I stood speechless for a moment. The warehouse was the size of 3 football fields, and it was packed end to end, 15 feet high with toys. Countless workers were stacking, packing, and boxing. Christmas music blared through the loud speakers. Santa's helper jumped down and unloaded the box of toys from my car. He was thrilled! Here was a guy who had enough toys to fill a aircraft carrier, and me dropping off just minutes before his deadline. He says, "Merry Christmas," to me and shakes my hand. He was full of joy and excited at my selection of toys. Three of his helpers came over to see what I had brought. All of them thanked me, shook my hand and wished me a Merry Christmas. The massive door was thrown shut. I was left alone, standing in the quiet, on the oil stained gravel parking lot. I could not stop smiling. Time slowed down. I had not a care in the world. I was just touched by the true meaning of Christmas at a random warehouse in the middle of Colorado. Sharing with others, caring for others, the kindness of strangers, giving and not caring about receiving. I drove slowly, blaring Christmas tunes all the way home.

Other doctors also recommend the natural swinging, rocking and bouncing motion of a baby hammock to induce sleep. I just came back from a 10 day beach vacation with my spouse and our two children. We spent up to 4 to 6 hours everyday on the beach or by the pool in full sun. Needless to say we went through numerous bottles of sunscreen. I find it amazing and confusing how they all can be so different in both price and effectiveness. Here is a basic breakdown of important terms used on sunscreen labels.
UVA- ultraviolet A radiation. Penetrating rays that cause sunburn, wrinkles, and age spots and contribute to skin cancer.
UVB- ultraviolet
B radiation. Can cause sunburn and other skin damage and contribute to skin cancer.
SPF- sun-protection factor, a measure of UVB sunburn protection on treated skin as compared with untreated skin. Basically, if your skin normally takes 10 minutes to turn red, SPF 30 lengthens that time to about 300 minutes.
Broad Spectrum- implies that the produt blocks UVA and UVB radiation, but doesn't indicate how effective the blocking is.
PABA Free- contains no esters of para-aminobenzoic acid, an older sun blocking ingredient that caused allergic reactions. Most sunscreens do not use this ingredient anymore.
Very Water Resistant- maintains the claimed SPF after 80 minutes in water. "Waterproof" has no FDA accepted definition, but it is used by some manufacturers to mean very water resistant.
Confused? I still am. What I found that works best for my children is not so much the brand name or claims, but how you apply and re-apply the sunscreen. It is recommended that you buy a sunscreen that is labeled very water resistant or waterproof and with an SPF of at least 30.
Apply the sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure. I found this to be the key factor in protecting my children. Easier said than done of course. Reapply every two hours is another key factor. Again, good luck! we found sprays to be affective but difficult to apply outdoors. The key to sprays is to do them early, often, and indoors. Of course the sun protective rash guards are a great addition to your sunscreen arsenal. It saved my sons shoulders this year.
Here are a few of consumer Reports recommended sunscreens from the July 2009 addition.
Coppertone Water Babies SPF 50 lotion
Aveeno continuous Protection Spray SPF 45
Walgreens continuous spray sport SPF 50
Banana Boat Sport performance SPF 50 Lotion- We liked this one
Target Sport Continuous spray SPF 30
