I Want This Stroller!

I'm not sure why, but I want this stroller. I would love to put on a black cape and mask and pull up next to some moms in the park pushing their weak jog strollers and challenge them to a race. I would fire up my Ipod in the custom Ipod dock. Then I would press play on the DVD player and roll the intro to Top Gun and shout Go! They Don't stand a chance.

This is a real stroller. It is The Limited Edition Harmony. A joint project of Pinstripe Prep, makers of fine baby and kid gear ["country club couture without the snobbery"], custom car guru Joe Iacono and the mastermind Jason Albert, whose expert hands bring each custom Harmony into the world.

The price tag you ask? It can be yours for around $3000. It all depends on wether you want the Ipod and DVD, the retractable cup-holders, the self-regenerating power-assisted drivetrain and brakes, the custom paint and custom wheels and custom luggage.

I say I want it all. College fund be damned. I'm making my cape while I wait the estimated 2 months for it to be produced.

Bilibo
My son and daughter came into the store and were instantly attracted to this cool new imaginative toy. I can't wait to try sled riding with it! This is definitely a new kind of toy.

The elementary shells leave room for the child's imagination. Instead of imposing a specific play pattern, Bilibo is open for a wide range of interpretations and encourages the children to invent their own games, to play and have fun in an active and creative way. Indoors and outdoors, in the sand-pit, in the water or even in the snow... Bilibo is full of surprises.

Both boys and girls can find virtually unlimited ways to play with Bilibos - from rocking, spinning, and sitting to hiding under, carrying with, and peeking through... Bilibo provides hours of open-ended play.

Summer Travel with the Kids

It has been a very busy summer of travel for our family. With the kids hitting ages 6 and 8, we have reached our travel tipping point. Our children are now self sufficient little units, with the power to feed, dress, wash, brush, ask nicely, not throw a fit, and enjoy life as a child should. Our hard work has payed off, and it's nice to see the results.

Road trips are now a lot of fun. Music cranking windows down kinda fun, with only the occasional threat from me to pull the car over on the highway.

We have less equipment restraints with our children now. Car seats, which gave way to booster seats are now not needed. No more switching seats from car to car, or checking them at the airport with the embarrassingly large plastic bag.

The dreaded pack-n-play is long gone. Diaper bags have become travel and computer bags. Strollers, as my son told me 3 years ago, " are for babies." Front carriers, slings, backpacks, travel cot, infant sun tent, sippy cups...not needed.

I wonder how my mother raised the four of us without the convenience of all the safety and child products we have today. I remember fondly, long summer drives to a lake somewhere far away with the four of us jumping around the back of our giant Ford wagon unrestrained. My mother smoking a cigarette and driving 85mph (the speed limit was 75mph) telling us all to settle down or she would pull the car over. I knew she wouldn't. Did I also hear the tinkling of ice in a tumbler?

No car seats, no DVD, Game Boy, PSP, or other mind numbing device. Just us the open road and a lot of fun. I spy, the alphabet game, 3 thirds of a ghost, and harassing my sisters were games we played as we whizzed by farms and cornfields.

My children are very fond of the alphabet game, except my son wants me slow down so he can read the signs better. I can't wait for our next road trip. And for the parents of smaller children and allot of gear, it is still absolutely worth it. Now let's drive.

Finger Puppet Fun

I get to spend a lot of time searching for unique and special toys and gear for children. Every once in awhile I laugh out loud when I find a special something. These finger puppets kill me. Some parents won't understand the humor and that's ok, but damn I love em!

Hindu God Finger Puppets
Their all here. Brahma, Ganesha, Garuda and Kali. Teach your children about Hindu theology or just have fun reincarnating yourself.

Axis of Evil Puppets
The Axis of Evil in a succinct package (Kim Jong Il, Khamenei, Saddam and George W.). They're finger puppets , and they are magnetic. Put the Axis on your fridge!

Great Philosophers Puppets
What would these Greats say to each other? What would they say to you? Now you can be playwright, actor, and director, putting on countless productions. The Philosopher set includes Hegel, Nietzsche, Plato and Kant. They're magnetic too, so, when you're done, you can stick them to the fridge!

The Ten Plagues of Egypt Finger Puppets
With plague puppets this cute, you'll want to keep the blood-on-the-door-jamb joy of Passover alive the whole year through.

Sorry, we don't sell these finger puppets, we just love them.

Cool Music for Kids

I am constantly in search of new music for myself and for my kids. I like to find tunes that are appropriate for all of us. Fun, moving, interesting, clever, clap hands, rump shakin good music. Please, not Barney blurting, or Dora slaughtering both the English and Spanish musical language. These two characters are fine if my kids want to listen to them alone or with friends, but when we are listening, dancing, and air banding together, I want something substantial.

There are many more options today for the music obsessed parent. Great artist from the near past like Replacements front man Paul Westerberg, Lisa Loeb, They Might Be Giants, and former Del Fuegos principal Dan Zanes have all cut albums for the under 10 set in recent years. Jason Ringenburg, frontman of Jason and the Scorchers, has reincarnated himself as farmer Jason.

Most of their music fits my criteria, but some of it can make you want to smash your sons Lego tower. It's all a matter of taste and tolerance when it comes to sharing music with your children.

Here are some of my children's favorites:

The Beatles-classic choice I know but it gets them every time
Micheal Franti and Spearhead- uplifting, positive, reggae vibe. My daughters absolute favorite
Andrew Bird-hauntingly beautiful, great chill down music, and he whistles!
Jack Johnson- my son is convinced that it's curious george singing
The Young Dubliners- they can't help that they have some Irish blood coursing through them
Ray Charles- they love the song Mess Around
Elvis- you cant go wrong with the king
Putumayo compilations- they love them all-a especially Reggae for Kids
Green Day- they like the rock.
The Reals- they love it because their dad plays in the band.
Dan Zanes- rocket ship beach is alot of fun
Jerry Garcia & David Grisman- not for kids only cd is good music for evryone.
Boogie Nights Sountrack- Disco baby!

The Claim: You Can Predict the Sex of a Baby by the Way the Mother Is Carrying

By ANAHAD OCONNOR in The New York Times
Published: January 2, 2007

THE FACTS If a pregnant woman is carrying low, it'’s a boy. If she i’s carrying high, it i’s a girl. And if she i’s carrying all the weight out front in the shape of a basketball, then it'’s probably a boy.

This refrain has been around for centuries, repeated in various forms and used by some women to decide whether to go with pink or blue for the baby's room. The claim has its origins in Hippocratic times, when it was believed that male fetuses were conceived on the right and girls on the left, said Dr. Jonathan Schaffir, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Ohio State University.

But revered as it may be, the method has no scientific basis. Most experts say the only reason it has persisted for so long is that, much like flipping a coin, there is a 50/50 chance of its being right.

In a large 1999 study, researchers at Johns Hopkins recruited 104 pregnant women who did not know the sex of their babies and put the maxim to the test: They found that the shape of the abdomen was a poor predictor of a baby'’s sex.

But some findings were unexpected. Women with more than 12 years of education correctly predicted the sex of their babies about 70 percent of the time, compared with 43 percent of the time for less educated women. And predictions that were based on dreams and feelings, it turned out, were more accurate than those based on the way a woman carried.

THE BOTTOM LINE The shape of a pregnant woman'’s belly is a poor predictor of a baby'’s sex.

Crush Groove

My daughter has a crush on a boy and it's killing me.

I don't want her to like boys. I want her to like crayons and spinning around until she falls to the ground in hysterical laughter. I want her to like Barbie, but to keep her distance from Ken. I want her to like reading in bed, making doll homes out of discarded boxes, painting her nails, and listenting to her favorite music.

I want her to like harassing her brother with her cunning. I want her to like going to the zoo, eating popsicles no matter what the temperature. I want my daughter to like going to school, learning, and hanging out with her girlfriends .

However, that is precisely where the trouble began. The group of girls has planted the seed that has grown into a full on crush. Love letters, maps on how to deliver the love letters, and directions for all the girls to paticipate in said delivery of the letters, have all transpired during the girls "hanging out."

There is nothing I can do. It's time to get over it and move on.

Maybe third grade will be different

Denver Skate Park

This is a thank you letter to my 5 year old son. Thank you for making me skate again. It has been a few years since I put wheels to concrete. I had forgotten just how much I love it.

My son found my skateboard hanging in the garage over a year ago, and he has been obsessed with it ever since. He has his own deck now, along with his beloved Tony Hawk signature helmet. If it were up to him, we would ride every day.

Im not going to get all philisophical about skateboarding or how sports help you develop as a person. However, it has been a joy to watch my 5yr old develop in the skatepark. I watch from a distance, often times cringing, as he decides if he has the ability to drop into a new even steeper area. It may take him ten minutes to figure it out, but when he does, he does it with the right amount of confidence, determination, joy, and fear.

I learn something from my children everyday.

Ride On!

Check out the new Wheely Bug ride on from Prince Lionheart.

The distinctive shape of the Original Wheely Bug is very user friendly. The bright and friendly design is an instant attraction to girls and boys alike. The humorous version of my daughter’s birth story
by Agnes Eva Savich

At 38 weeks preggo, I went with my husband Scott to see comedian Ralphie May perform. I laughed for two hours straight, bounce-bounce-bouncing baby's head down onto my cervix, until I started to feel mild contractions. On my way out I shook Ralphie’s hand and joked, “That was so hilarious, I think you actually made me go into labor.”

When I went to bed that night, a definite rhythm had emerged: lower whale-body onto bed, heave belly over body pillow, close eyes, spring awake 30 minutes later, hoist self to bathroom, peeeeeeeeee, waddle back to bed, lower whale-body…

By noon the next day I called my midwife Sandra, all ready to head down to the birth center. To my surprise, I was told to drink some beer, take a Benadryl and lie down, for I was surely in false labor. I dutifully obeyed this bewildering combination of orders, and indeed slept a couple hours.

All night my contractions picked up intensity. My poor husband got the punching bag end of my pain, until I was encouraged to squeeze his shoulder instead. Somehow I made it to morning and called Sandra again.

It’s just prodromal labor,” she said, “ignore it and go about your day as usual.”

I hung up thinking, “Dromedaries? What does my labor have to do with camels? And ignore this pain, is she kidding?”

Now it was Scott’s football worshipping Sunday, so I glommed onto the couch with him. My contractions were synced up with the tackles. The crash of the football players' bodies into each other helped me deal with the pain. Slam! Oh you think THAT hurt, buddy, at least the football isn’t trying to come out of your butt!

Sandra finally conceded to let me come to the birth center at 9pm so she could check me and “probably send me back home.” It’s a testament to my insanity that I changed the time to 9:15pm, so I could finish watching Desperate Housewives.

Upon arrival, I was 4cm dilated. “Touchdown!,” I felt like yelling. Scott returned home, because of course we hadn’t yet installed the car seat, or brought my ridiculously overpacked suitcase from which I only used two candles and choked down one Fruit Leather. Did I mention he took the time to shave and chat online with some buddies before returning? Ok, it was only to tell them I’m in labor but he was gone for, like, hours. (Later he told me, “Do you know how convoluted those car seat instructions are!!??”)

Upon returning, he filmed some of the labor, so I could hear my lovely whale mating calls for posterity: “NGuuuuuuuuuuuh. NNNNgggguuuuuuuhhhhhh.” I remember at one point feeling like a feral animal, gasping out, “Hair. Off. Face,” then clawing Scott’s fumbled attempts with the rubber band into my own hands after the contraction subsided.

The light at the end of the tunnel was the moment my daughter’s head popped out. Like a little alien peering in from a rift in time-space, she fully opened her eyes and just hung out there, half born, surveying everyone poised for her birth. Then the final contraction came, a sensation I completely blocked from memory, because the next thing I knew was her floppy little smooth body being handed up to me. I just started gushing “I love you” to her, Scott, Sandra, the assistant. Only the remaining task of delivering the placenta kept me from declaring my love to the inanimate objects in the room. Labor had begun with laughter, and ended with total joy.

Holy cr#%! I'm a Soccer Parent!

Let me start by saying that I do not drive a mini-van. Now I feel better.
For the last 4 weeks I have been, searching the entire house for cleats, shin guards, socks, shorts, and water bottles. I have spent an entire afternoon creating and ironing on jersey numbers and logos. A sweet thunderbolt if you must know.

I spend the week driving my son and daughter to separate practice and match play fields. I cut oranges into slices for 7 to 11 children. I have never cut an orange into slices. I just like to peel them.

I carry folding chairs in the car at all times. I juggle schedules with my spouse so that our children can make every practice and game. I even let myself get talked into coaching this sport that I know absolutely nothing about.

Damn the World Cup. Who knew that watching a few matches would create a passion for sport in my children.

Saturday I witnessed my daughter break out of the amoeba of children surrounding the ball, and dribble it the length of the field and stuff it in for a goal. She thrust her hands up, and all the girls did cartwheels and jumped for joy. It didn't even matter that the other team was up by at least 17 goals.

I am ridiculously proud of my children, and would gladly drive to Cheyenne from Denver every day, with a giant bag of orange slices and my folding chairs, to witness my children jump for joy.

School is in Session

I dropped my children off at school today. Just like I have for the past four years, except this time I didn't have to return for 7 hours!

It has arrived. The magical time we have been waiting for. A new frontier. The time my mother referred to as " a happy time."

Both of my children are in school full time.

I have fond memories of my mother taking me back to school shopping at a rag tag department store called Uncle Bills. There were tables of notebooks and shelves of pens and glues. I would choose my folders and pens carefully, as my mother would scout out a few white button down shirts and clip-on ties to enhance my Catholic school wardrobe. She would even let me by some bad popcorn from the snack area.

Happy times indeed.

I think I'll take my kids to Big Lot's tomorrow.

Traveling in Troubled Times With Your Children

We just returned from a fantastic 10 day trip to the coast of Maine. Returning relaxed, our 5 hour drive to Logan airport in Boston turned stressfull when NPR radio announced the foiled terrorist plot in the U.K.

I thought how terrible and unfortunate. My wife and I disscussed our frustration with the state of the world and how lucky we are . Then we realized that terrorist plot half way across the world was going to royally screw up our day!

Our kids, 5 and 7yrs, sensed our change in attitude and began asking us questions. It's hard trying to explain in a 30 second blurb to a child why some people want to take down planes, hurt certain countries, and hate certain people.

Some times I wish I could make Barney magically appear and sing a little song about Hezzbollah, Jihad, and the Taliban. I just don't think Barney could find any words to create a rhyme.

So we kept it basic and to the point. Good versus evil, people wanting certain freedoms and others trying to take those freedoms away. We try to keep it open and unaccusing. No Blame, just people seeing things differently. Very differently.

Of course the kids stay interested for about 30 seconds and then the glaze hits their face and then there is the verbal explosion of, " look a cow!!" from our 5 year old as we drive by a farm.

Life is back to normal. You just cant carry on your sippy cup anymore.
